Two of the large sarsens now flank the entrance to Fryerning Road from the High Street, whilst the third (to which the grid ref belongs) is nowadays to be found in the churchyard beside the south entry.
The name Ingatestone originates from the ancient Yenge-atte-Stone which translates into the modern 'parcel of land by the stone'. In Roman times, the latin placename was "Ging ad Petram" possibly implying that the locals were of the Gigingas tribe, and again Petram referring to the stone.
It is unknown whether the pieces of sarsen once all belonged to a single large standing stone, or if indeed there was once a stone circle here - perhaps on the small mound where the church now stands. It's nice to dream!
