East of Wheathamstead at TL186133 are two dykes, one of which is Devil's Dyke. 12m deep and 40m across at its widest, the dyke is of the Iron Age. It has been suggested that the dyke, overlooking the marshy Lea valley, formed part of the tribal defence of Cassivellaunus which was attacked by Ceasar in 54BC.
