A triangular earthwork on Ashtead Common. There is a Roman villa close nearby, and Surrey Archaeological Society report that this earthwork has been shown to be prehistoric, with a second phase of use in the mid 1st century AD, see comment below for link to more details.

Regular open days are held at the Roman villa site, more details on Ashtead Common on the Corporation of London web site.

The Ashtead Common Management plan says this:

Prehistoric finds have been documented elsewhere on Ashtead Common, including a few tracks and some evidence of Mesolithic slash and burn practices. (Currie, 1999).

With its prominent position in the local landscape and readily available supplies of fresh water, timber for building and wood for fuel, Ashtead Common would certainly have been an attractive prospect for ancient people to build an encampment. .

The camp (County Monument Number 26) lies to the south-west of the site of the Roman villa and is described as being a large triangular-shaped earthwork enclosure. It is approximately 125m by 180m in size and is of unknown origin or age (Lever, 1978).

The earthworks of the camp are still visible and comprise a shallow ditch and bank. In 2003, an extensive project was completed to clear this monument of most trees to reduce root damage to its important features and enhance the visual appreciation of the site, under the guidance of English Heritage and the County Archaeologist for SCC.

Well on Ashtead Common by Andy B on Thursday, 15 April 2010
(User Info | Send a Message)

You may not know it but Ashtead Common
has an old well, not unlike the one for which
Epsom is so famous. Although Ashtead never
developed into a Spa town like its neighbour,
there’s evidence that its medicinal well
received some attention for its purgative
waters during the 17th century. The location
of the well, not far from the Roman Villa,
also suggests a possible link with the site’s
Roman past.

This year, we’ve been gathering research
material on the well and over the coming
months, we intend to erect interpretation
material to mark the site. Well worth doing!
