Hillfort in Bedfordshire

Remains of an Iron Age univallate hillfort, which is partly ploughed over. The rampart has been supported with a timber pallisade similar to the one in Hollingbury hillfort. The site has been inhabitated also in medieval period (remains of a medieval enclosure of 110 x 80 m diameter are still visible).

(User Info | Send a Message)
The Friends of Putnoe Wood and Mowsbury Hillfort were formed in March 2011 and became a constituted group in May 2012. We assist and work with the Country Park Rangers and the Bedford Borough Parks Department at Putnoe Wood and Mowsbury Hillfort. In addition, advise and guidance is sought from the Wild Life Trust, Albion Archaeology, Opal, English Heritage and other relevant bodies.

Practical tasks are normally arranged for Wednesdays or occasionaly Saturday afternoons, times vary depending on the time of year but is normaly between 1.30 and 4.00pm and all tools, equipment and refreshments are provided.

We hold informal Friends meetings every two months with the Park Rangers and Borough representatives to discuss and arrange tasks, events and progress.
