JohnLindsay visited on 1st Jan 2012 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 This site is on the main road from Dunstable towards Aylesbury, 61 bus hourly, but a walk from the main Dunstable cross roads, the Icknield Way and Watling St. The knoll group in a straight line is quite impressive, pointing almost directly to Maiden Bower. The National Trust Chilterns Intepretation centre is nearby, though I'm afraid that is a shopping centre rather than an interpretation centre, there appears to be about nothing on the megalithic Chilterns but in Dunstable Library there is a good collection. There is a community heritage Priory Centre in the grounds of what remains of the Abbey and there is a local society, the Manshead, which publishes archaeology. The first day I was there, during the blizzard, everything white with snow, a few days later, all melted and green, with a blue sky. Now I have found http://www.archaeologyuk.org/cbasm/index_htm_files/VOLUME%2019.PDF not sure how accurate the pdf register is, this is vol 19, and titled five knolls

Could this be the location of the grave described and illustrated here http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/gsl/geoscientist/features/page11757.html as the skeletons of a mother and child surrounded by hundreds of stars contained in the markings of fossil sea-urchins.

Thanks George, as ever :-) I was hoping there'd be something to see of the site of such an unusually poignant burial. Another one lost to the mists of Time.

Even the exact spot is not known ,although it must ahve been much closer to the present day road as well as south of the five Knolls . There was another barrow nearby also gone ,of a boy " between the hands was a nodule of iron pyrites " .

Theses five round barrows (and 2 others i am uncertain of) sit on the edge of the Dunstable Downs with commanding views of the vale of Aylesbury and from here you can see Ivinghoe Beacon, Maiden Bower(just) and Totternhoe Knolls.

Its also a very windy spot with gliders overhead most of the time from the glider club below.

Four of the Knolls have been damaged by bikes using them as ramps but otherwise its great location with a carpark at the nearby Dunstable Downs Visitor centre.
