Ring Cairn in Yorkshire (North)
A bronze age ring cairn located towards the north western edge of Stony Marl Moor. It lies close by a track and just to the north of an extensive CAIRNFIELD.
Historic England (last update 2001) describes it as a bronze age ring cairn with a circular earth and stone built bank with an overall total diameter of 10m with the bank being 1.5m wide and up to 0.5m high. However the ‘HERR’ has a different take on it after a reassessment following the 2003 wild fire which destroyed the ground vegetation. They describe it as being up to 23m in diameter with a pit dug into it and interpret it as a ring cairn which appears to have been re-used as a round barrow.
Whilst the cairn is not marked on the present day (2023) 1:25 OS map, it is shown on Historical OS maps as a Tumulus such as this 1853 one HERE. When the map opens go to the bottom left hand corner and you will see Cook House (farm) just to the east of that you will see the tumulus above a sheepfold.
I also note with interest that the sheepfold does not show on later historical maps and looked to have disappeared. However it resurfaced after the wild fire and field investigators interpreted it as a possible bronze age ring cairn, however the fact that it was shown on the 1853 map as sheepfold dampened that idea, see HERE. However the supposition is not without merit as the poor condition of the earthen banks may verify a prehistoric origin and the enclosure used again at a later date.*
