Cholesbury Camp
Cholesbury Camp submitted by ocifant : Looking from the centre of the site toward one of the entrances, summer 2003. The area of the fort now appears to be church land - a small church takes up one part of the perimeter, the rest is open fields, used by local dog walkers etc. The village encroaches slightly on the site on the side nearest the church. Cholesbury Camp is on the borders of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. It is a multivallate hillfort and was mistakenly names "The Danish Camp" in the 19th century.

The hillfort is roughly oval in plan and measures approximately 310m north east to south west by 230m north west to south east. The interior of the hillfort is quite level. The earthen ramparts lie mostly within a wooded belt which encircles all but the southern quarter of the hillfort, where the banks and ditches have been obscured by houses and gardens.

Cholesbury Camp survives well; the interior has seen little disturbance and the greater part of the defences remain largely unaltered. It is one of the most visually impressive prehistoric settlements of the Chilterns, and one of the few in the region to have seen a sample excavation. The interior wasshown to contain well-preserved buried remains from the period of occupation, with evidence of metal-working.
