Lady Cross (Egton Low Moor)
Lady Cross (Egton Low Moor) submitted by johndhunter : Lady Cross at NZ 81477 08327 – West Face, October 2011. At one time this face had GUIS 1771 engraved on it. GUIS being short for Guisborough (Vote or comment on this photo)
A wayside cross in North Yorkshire which marked an old route, which bears no semblance to modern routes. The south face has what is supposed to be undecipherable mirror writing on it, and the north face still has some discernible text.

Located on the north side of the main A171 Whitby to Guisborough road just to the west of its junction with the minor road to Barnby. Though not in its original position it will be close to it, an unnamed stone is shown on the 1853 OS map at this locality with the place name Lady Cross Gate above it, this unnamed stone will probably be the cross. Subsequent OS maps do not show the stone, only the place name Lady Cross Gate with the latest maps just Lady Cross. The cross survives as the remains of a broken shaft reused as an 18C guide stone and set in a mediaeval type base.

It is a wayside cross which marked an old route (which bears no semblance to modern routes) from the ridgeway which the A171 runs along down to Grosmont Priory (Site of at NZ 8281 05779) via Cotebank Farm (NZ82564 06968). The shaft was reused as a guide stone in the 18C and according to R.H.Hayes had at one time WHITBY ROAD engraved on the east face. GUIS ROAD 1771 was also engraved on it, however he does not say which face. This is all now illegible. Hayes also tells us that it was broken by roadmen in 1939.
Source: R.H. Hayes - Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire, page 23

The cross is Pastscape Monument 29234 which tells us from information provided by F. Wilkinson of Sleights that the shaft was re-erected in Oct. 1955 after being found lying in the gutter. It is possible that it no longer has its original orientation as the face which carried the engraving WHITBY ROAD is now facing north (The letter H is still clear) Both Pastscape and Historic England List Entry Number 1009848 say that the lettering on the south face is mirror writing of what they do not say and it is quite undecipherable.

Anomalies: Ogilivie and Sleighthome in their 1994 book “An Illustrated Guide to the Crosses on the North Yorkshire Moors” page 4 state The shaft is an 18th century waymarker with the words GUIS ROAD 1771 and WHITBY ROAD on the north and west faces (should say west and north faces ) they also go on to say that the base is modern – Pastscape implies that it is a medieval base.

My view: When they re erected it in 1955 why would they bother making a special mediaeval type base for it. When the roadmen broke the original shaft and it ended up in the gutter would not the original base have remained where it was? To be reused later.

To recap: The remains of a wayside cross set in a medieval type base whose broken shaft has been reused as an 18C guide stone. Though the lettering is now illegible the north face had WHITBY ROAD on it, the west face GUIS 1771 and the south face undecipherable mirror writing

Lady Cross (Egton Low Moor) submitted by johndhunter : Lady Cross at NZ 81477 08327 – North Face, July 2019. At one time this face had WHITBY ROAD engraved on it. The letter H can still be clearly seen and what is probably the letter O underneath. This view also shows the mediaeval type base the shaft is mounted in. (Vote or comment on this photo)
