Barrow Cemetery in Yorkshire (North)

A large earth covered mound/barrow which stands in a clearance surrounded by Forestry Comission plantations. Also in the clearance is a ruined farmhouse and nearby are some very old field boundaries. The site is visible from the nearby footpath and just off a forest road. Although it is not apparent when there, this is actually a high spot of land before the Wheeldale Moor. A better view of topography can be gained from the viewing platform of the Cawthorne Banks Roman Practice Camp (where threre are also 2 tumuli/cairns/square barrows). This Howe is much larger than most in the area and gives its name to surrounding houses which gives the impression that it once was an important place. There is a further, though far less impressive, 'tumulus' nearby roughly north-north-west.
