Lealholm Moor Ring Cairn
Lealholm Moor Ring Cairn submitted by johndhunter : Ring Cairn at NZ 75829 09347 – Viewed looking easterly, Jan 2020. To help identify the shape in this two dimensional image I used gardening sticks with barrier tape attached, except for the walking stick circled in the centre of the image which marks what I believe to be an entrance to the ring cairn. Ring Cairn in North Yorkshire

Located in a prominent position on Lealholm moor, 80m to the east of a pronounced round barrow. It is I believe only relatively recently that it has been correctly categorised as a ring cairn, in fact Pastscape (as of Feb 2020) Monument 28781 under the main description heading state that it “is described as a round cairn consisting of a 4m wide earth and stone bank 0.4m high and 14m in diameter, although it is possible this could be a barrow with a robbed centre.”. However under the heading “More information & Sources” it is described as a probable ring cairn with an internal ring measurement of 5m x 8m.

Around 2011 when this location first attracted my attention, with the information I had at the time I thought I was looking for a round barrow albeit denuded as no mound was visible. The heather will have been deep and because I was looking for a mound even denuded I surmised that there was no longer anything there. Over the intervening years when passing by this way I have walked over two or three times to have another look, lately in 2016 and again saw nothing because my brain had become blinkered to look for a mound. If I’d only read Historic England List Entry Number 1018747 first (last updated 1998), then I would not have wasted my time. It specifically states that it is a ring cairn which “is formed by a 4m wide earth and stone bank typically 0.4m high which describes a 14m diameter circle”.

With this in mind in January 2020 I paid another visit and as luck would have it, the heather had been burnt off sometime over the last couple of years and though regenerating, the ring cairn stood out quite clearly for what it is, I also think it is penannular with what is probably an entrance, about 1.5m wide at 60° (ENE). Historic England also tell us that the ring cairn “shows no evidence of disturbance by antiquarian excavation and the interior and encircling bank is thus considered to retain intact archaeological deposits including burials”.
