Dyke in Yorkshire (North). The grid reference given is where the minor road down to Westerdale cuts through the dyke. This is the northern of the two Bronze Age cross dykes on Castleton Rigg and is a boundary feature. Its overall length across the rigg is about 200m.
The main north / south road along the rigg cuts through the dyke at its eastern end leaving a very short section to the east of the road which is immediately terminated by the steep drop over Low Crag. The dyke is further penetrated by the minor road which runs down into Westerdale about 70 m from its eastern end . In reality what you have left today is two main sections of the dyke, an eastern section that runs between the two roads which is denuded either end and a western section which runs from the western side of the minor road toward the steep slope down into Westerdale where it gradually fades out. The modern OS map does not show the cross dyke itself. It gives the impression that the cross dyke runs alongside the minor road by writing the word Cross Dyke beneath it. This is misleading it runs pretty much straight across the rigg except for the western end where it curves a little as it approaches the slope. Best viewed on Google Earth or similar for an overall view.
Pastscape also has information on this cross dyke at Pastscape Monument 28189 There is an anomaly in that the Pastscape entry describes the dyke as follows “It consists of a central east - west ditch flanked by a substantial earth and stone bank to the north and a more graded bank to the south” Whereas in the CBA Research Report 101 (1995) - The brides of place: cross-ridge boundaries reviewed by Blaise Vyner page 28 it states “It extends for 200m between the steep sides of the rigg and is an earthwork construction with no obvious stone content” So you can take your pick as to what it is actually made of.
Note : At the time of uploading the Pastscape website appears to be down so there is no way of verifying the link in the description
