Anne T visited on 9th Apr 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Three Howes Rigg (West), Smeathorns Road, North Yorkshire: Despite being called ‘Three Howes’, there are actual 5 barrows in total! It would be easy to whizz by these barrows, as they appear as slight mounds at the top of the ridge. With cars speeding by at a good 60mph or so, it’s difficult to slow down and park, but there is a space between the two barrows on the western side of the road, flanked by large boulders to protect the fourth and fifth barrows. Once identified, they are obvious in the landscape. Having first stopped at White Cross some 500 metres to the north, being on access land, we tramped over the heather and moorland to take a closer look. We started with the two barrows to the west of the road and worked our way northwards. The northern-most has been cut slightly by the road to its eastern side; the southern-most was heavily covered in calf-high bracken. We missed the inscribed stone in the middle of this one, but the carving seems to be relatively modern, looking at the Historic England entry.

Three Howes Rigg (West)
Three Howes Rigg (West) submitted by Anne T : The larger of the two round barrows on the western side of the road at Three Howes Rigg. The larger boulders presumably stop people from parking and destroying the site, although it creates a handy layby to stop and enjoy all five of the barrows at this location (bar the traffic speeding by!). Sited at NZ 68106 10279. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)

Part of a set of five round barrows sitting on the top of Three Howes Rigg, these two barrows sit on the western side of the Smeathorns Road from the A171 leading to Castleton. To avoid confusion of too many sites in the same vicinity, the other three are described on Three Howes Rigg (East).

Sited at NZ 68106 10279 and NZ 68109 10242 and scheduled together as Historic England List Entry 1018768: "the two round barrows (lie) 560m SSE of White Cross (and) are centred 40m apart and lie just west of the road to Castleton from White Cross. The northern barrow is 18m in diameter and 1.7m high with a slightly dished top so that the centre is 0.4m below the highest point. The southern barrow is 17m in diameter sited on slightly sloping ground so that it is 0.5m high on the northern side, 1.5m high on the southern side. It is surrounded by a 6m wide platform defined by a break of slope on the southern and western sides and by a slight ditch on the northern side. The eastern side, along with 1m-2m of the eastern edge of the barrow has been cut by the road. The surrounding platform is included in the scheduling. The top of the barrow has an irregular depression up to 0.6m deep with a small upright stone on its eastern lip. This stone is 0.35m by 0.1m with 0.8m exposed above the ground. The stone is orientated so that the larger faces point roughly east and west, with the west face slightly southwards. The stone is inscribed in three places, each to different depths and weathered to different degrees, implying the inscriptions are of different dates."

It is easy, when driving past at speed along Smeathorns Road, to dismiss these as spoil from road building, but if stopping to look at Three Howes Rigg (East), it is well worth crossing the road to take a look.

The small upright stone (0.35m by 0.1m with 0.8m exposed above the ground) mentioned in the site description is now missing and has been since about 2012. There are photos of this stone showing both the east and west faces uploaded in 2002 to the Modern Antiquarian website
Here Both the 1993 book “The Crosses of the North Yorkshire Moors” Page 19 by Lewis Graham and the 1994 book “An Illustrated Guide to the Crosses on the north Yorkshire Moors” Page 7 by Elizabeth Ogilvie and Audrey Sleightholme describe the carving at the top of the west side of the stone as a damaged Face. Historic England do not describe it as a Face they describe it as follows “This is a design showing a shape like a downward pointing single spiked spur which encloses a plain vertical cross within the U of the spur, with a dot in the top right quadrant of the cross. Both the upper parts of the U and the cross are truncated by the loss of the upper part of the stone”.
List Entry Number 1018768 Pastscape describes it as a cross though they do not say what the actual side it is on
Pastscape" target="_blank" target="_new">https://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=28459&sort=2&rational=m&recordsperpage=10&maplat=54.48340000&maplong=-0.95020000&mapisa=1000&mapist=ll&mapilo=-0.9502&mapila=54.4834&mapiloe=w&mapilan=n&mapios=NZ680103&mapigrn=510306&mapigre=468006&mapipc=">Pastscape Monument 28459 Both Historic England and Pastscape say that the other inscriptions on the stone are the date 1882 and a bench mark. Historic England are specific and say that these inscriptions are on the east side They are incorrect about the date, it’s 1832 not 1882 and this can be clearly seen on the image posted to the Modern Antiquarian Website. I myself also see what appears to be a small cross carved above the 3 in that image. Stanhope White in his 1987 book “Standing Stones & Earthworks on the North Yorkshire Moors” page 45 describes the stone as follows “On the roadside north of Castleton is a stone at 681103 with the date 1832 on the east and a rough cross on the west, said to mark where a young servant girl committed suicide” I first went looking for this stone in what I am pretty sure was 2012 and all I found was a neat hole where I surmised the stone should have been and if my memory serves me correctly the hole wasn’t that deep . This indicated to me that the stone hadn’t fallen over but had been lifted straight up and out and hadn’t been gone long because of the neatness of the hole. This assumption would appear to be correct because whilst preparing to write up this comment (in September 2018) I happened to look at the barrow on Google street view and the stone appeared to be still there. I then realised that the street view imagery date was September 2011. So it probably went missing within a year of that imagery being taken.
