Round Barrows in Yorkshire (North)

The Black Howes consist of two adjacent bronze age round barrows, the northern one at NZ 66482 12522 and the southern one at NZ 66512 12491. They are the most prominent of a line of barrows that run along this particular ridge, alongside an old trod known as the Quakers Causeway which itself will have had its origins in prehistoric times, the barrows themselves are evidence of this.

This line of barrows alongside the causeway are known collectively as the Black House group and are at the northern end of a much longer line of barrows that run from here in a south east direction, following the ridge lines for about 2 ½ miles to PIKE HOWE on the southern end of Three Howes Rigg above Castleton.

The Black Howes as stated are prominent and occupy the highest point of the ridge on which they stand, with extensive all round views. They are stand out features within the landscape and when on the skyline can be seen from miles around.

Though previously disturbed both barrows were excavated by ATKINSON in May 1863. His description of the Black Howes North dig can be found in the August 1863 issue of the Gentleman's Magazine commencing page 125 and concluding towards the end page 126 which can be viewed HERE. The description of the Black Howes South dig which is very detailed is in the September 1863 issue pages 269 to 274 and can be viewed HERE.

For full details of what was found in the barrows see the links above otherwise the main finds in the north barrow were two cremation burials in urns along with bone pins. Whilst the southern barrow was found to be made up of three small cairns which had been covered. Within these cairns were found seven urns with calcined bones, along with jet beads and associated pottery.

Black Howes North at NZ 66482 12522 is made of earth and stone, 18m in diameter and 2m high. At the time of Atkinson's dig he gives the dimensions as 52ft (15.8m) and more than 6ft (1.8m) high in the centre.
Black Howes South at NZ 66512 12491 is made of earth and stone, 22m in diameter and 2m high. At the time of Atkinson's dig he gives the dimensions as 62ft (18.8m) and at least 8ft (2.4m) high in the centre.

I note that both barrows have a greater dimension now than when Atkinson excavated. Presumably because of spoil being thrown from the top, removal of kerb stones and slippage over the years etc.
