Cheriton Long Barrow
Cheriton Long Barrow submitted by JimChampion : Looking north at the side of the long barrow mound, which crosses the photo from left to right beyond the oilseed rape. The footpath across the field is on the other side of the barrow, this view is from the field gate on Lamborough Lane. The barrow is covered with grasses and so stands out in this field. It will probably be much more obvious when the oilseed crop has been harvested. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Neolithic long barrow on a south-facing slope, north of the source of the River Itchen. The barrow is roughly 70m long, 35m wide and 2m tall at its highest point. It has parallel flanking ditches to the north and south which are mostly filled in. A pottery sherd of Peterborough ware was found in this barrow during excavation in 1944 and is now at Winchester Museum. [source]

Access The barrow is in a field surrounded by crops, but as it is a scheduled monument it now survives untouched by the plough. There is no public access to the barrow, but there is a public footpath that diagonally crosses the field from NW to SE, and the field is surrounded on all four sides by other public rights of way (restricted byways).

Muted E-W feature on Environment Agency lidar (grey icon next to CamRA), little sign of side ditches. Appears to be fenced off in rectangular enclosure
