Sour Milk Hills Tumuli
Sour Milk Hills Tumuli submitted by johndhunter : Northern barrow viewed looking westerly, June 2014. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Two degraded bronze age round barrows in close proximity to each other in a prominent position on Sour Milk Hills towards the northern part of Hawnby Moor. They are located close to a track and marked on the present day OS map.

However because they are now basically just low level earthworks with a hole in the middle, a casual walker just walking by could easily miss them when the heather is high. Or even when you are looking for them but not really paying attention as I did the first time and had to backtrack to find them. There has also been quarrying in this area which has disturbed the ground.

The barrows are Historic England LIST ENTRY 1008422. which describes the southern barrow as being a flat topped earth and stone mound standing 1m high. It is round in shape and 8m in diameter.. The northern barrow is described as being 19m across but only 0.3m- 0.5m high. Both barrows have been dug into in the past.

HERR MONUMENT 57657 also has information.

They are the NYMNPA ‘HER’ 2031 and 2032 which describes them as slight earthworks

Note: The map reference given at the top of this site page is taken from the Historic England List Entry also the list entry as of March 2023 describes the barrows as being on the southern flank of Hawnby Moor, this is incorrect they are towards the northern end.
