Possible square barrow in Yorkshire (North)

Please see johndhunter's comment below with his thoughts and notes about this barrow. John calculates the grid reference to be NZ 51872 02396 (original given by Spratt NZ 518025). He also gives reference sources and a link to Pastscape for more information.

Possible Iron Age square barrow on the summit of Carlton Bank, close to the Cleveland Way. East to West it is about 16 paces long and North to South about 12 paces wide. Height guesstimate is about 1.5 to 2metres with a flat top and no sign of excavation. The sides are sloping (typical of a square barrow) and the corners have been rounded out over the years.

Some thoughts on this and other square barrows: Nearly all known square barrows in the UK are in the East Riding of Yorkshire, though there are some in the North Riding, most of which are on the southern slopes of the North Yorkshire Moors and are well documented. However invariably in whatever publication you are reading they will then quote two exceptions, outliers which they say are located on the northern part of the North Yorkshire Moors. These are the square barrows at Aislaby near Whitby and this single barrow on Carlton Bank, neither of which, as best that I can make out will you find any published documentation anywhere, which actually describes them.
The source for the square barrows in Aislaby is Rev George Young in his 1817 book A History of Whitby. On page 657 talking about tumuli he says “By far the greater part are round, some are square or oblong square, of which there are instances on the moor beyond Aislaby Quarries” He does not say exactly where but if he is writing a book about Whitby he means to the west of the quarries. No one has documented these square barrows since this publication in 1817 and no doubt they were ploughed under years ago, as to there exact location, no one knows, they are no longer extant.

The source for this single square barrow on Carlton Bank is an unpublished document (probably from the 1980’s) by Don Spratt (1922 – 1992). The location for this barrow NZ 518025 is given in various documents including CBA Research Report 87, BAR British Series 104, Revised to 1990 entitled “Prehistoric and Roman Archaeology of North East Yorkshire” page 151 – this publication is edited by Don Spratt. I strongly suspect this grid reference is not wholly accurate (for reasons to long to explain here). In the above mentioned publication also on page 151 talking about this square barrow it states “Another possible outlying example survives in a prominent position on the summit of Carlton Bank, a likely location for an important burial” This statement will have been written by Spratt or approved by Spratt (he was the editor). There are a couple of things to note, first and foremost he says that it is only a “possible” example, I suspect the original unpublished document says the same thing. Secondly he says it is on the summit of Carlton Bank i.e. on the top.

With this in mind, looking at old OS maps, specifically the more detailed 25 inch to the mile 1892 – 1914 map at NZ 51872 02396 there is tumulus with a distinctive squarish shape this is about 200 yards SSW of the present day Trig Point and just to the east of the Cleveland Way. If you then view this with satellite imagery (Zoom Earth seems to be the best) there is no doubt this has a square type shape, keeping in mind that square corners tend to get rounded out over the years. Go into Google Earth and locate this barrow (its not as clear as in other imagery), once located go down to the Cleveland Way in Street View (which you can) and look across at the barrow, its low height and distinctive flat top are typical of a square barrow, it is covered in heather but you can zoom in to see it better. Also walk up the bank in street view , then look back and zoom in, it gives another perspective. All satellite imagery can be viewed from within this site page

Pastscapes take on this tumulus is mentioned in Monument 27461 where under the sub heading: More Information and Sources it says “Mound (at B, NZ 51870240) 'could be a natural outcrop?” The source given for this statement is the annotated 6 inch OS map in 1954 by R.H. Hayes, who incidently was a compatriot of Don Spratt.

So with all the above in mind I decided to pay the area a visit. A couple of things to note:
