I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 31st May 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Lady Well (Kirklington): our first site, in our first day out for 15 months. What a delightful location, although a shame the well house itself is crumbling and full of rubbish. With the site of the deserted medieval village of Yarnwick in the same field, and to the north of, the well, it was a delight to be back in the countryside again I stopped to photograph a second, now capped well, presumably the well supplying the farmhouse, at SE 31634 81303.

Lady Well (Kirklington) submitted by Anne T : View of Lady Well, Kirklington, from just to its western side. The remains of building platforms from the now deserted medieval village of Yarnwick lie above, and to the left of, the well house. (Vote or comment on this photo)
A holy well located at the south eastern corner of the now deserted medieval village of Yarnwick, The well house is in disrepair, although water can still be seen filling the well basin inside the well house, through the rubbish and rubble which has fallen in. The surrounding meadow with its wildflowers (at the time of our visit) was a pleasure to be in.

The well is mentioned in McCall's "Richmondshire Churches" (1901, p95): "As Burneston had Saint Lambert's fountain, mentioned so early as the Twelfth century, so Kirklington possesses its Holy Well, beside the old Mill House on the north of the village", and Harte's "English Holy Wells" (1983, p356): The spring-name Lady Well appears on the 1856 OS at SE (4,4) 316 814. It features
in Whelan & Taylor (1989: 39, with drawing). The parish church is dedicated to the Virgin".

It also features on the Yorkshire Holy Wells website.

Parking is available around the small, triangular village green, at approx. SE 31753 81293. Follow the road westwards towards Hall Farm, then take a footpath which turns to the north, and runs through the farmyard. Immediately through the farmyard, there is a metal gate which leads into a meadow; crossing over the small stream, the well house is immediately to your left hand side.

At the entrance to Hall Farm, at SE 31634 81303, there is a now capped well (shown on the HE map search, and the 1892 OS map (see Yorkshire LXXXVI.15 25 inch map as a 'W'.

Lady Well (Kirklington) submitted by Anne T : Inside the well house, lots of farming rubbish and rubble has fallen into the well 'basin', although water still bubbles up into the well, and presumably is piped into the stream which runs immediately to the south. (Vote or comment on this photo)
