Gibbet Moor North stone circle is located on the featureless Gibbet Moor, with no footpaths, to the east of Chatsworth House. Discovered in 1985, it is an unusual site consisting of three standing local grit stones that appear to form three corners of a square. The stones, two of which are upright and one of which is leaning, are all just over 0.5m tall.

It has been suggested that this may be a monument known as a Four Poster, common in Scotland, but very rare in England, although here there is no evidence for the position of a fourth stone. Barnatt believes that if there was a fourth, all traces have probably been removed by a covering of peat.

This stone circle is included in the scheduling for Historic England List ID 1019000, described as a "Bronze Age settlement and ceremonial remains on Gibbet Moor, 980m north east of Swiss Cottage." Included in the large area scheduled are hut circle settlements, clearance cairns, small farms with field systems, and a cairn cemetery. Interestingly, HE also notes that "within the complex of prehistoric features are the more recent remains of military training during World War II." Sounds like a fascinating place to visit!

As at Gibbet Moor North a GPS is definitely recommended when visiting this site (and a copy of John Barnatt's Henges Stone Circles and Ringcairns of the Peak District with its excellent plans). The stones are all buried in the heather, even in the depths of winter but it is located quite close to the track leading to Hob Hurst's House, making it less hard going than Gibbet Moor North.

Recent surveys have suggested that it is perhaps a habitation site rather than a stone circle.
