Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by PaulM : Gardom’s Edge Prehistoric Rock Art, Derbyshire GR: SK273730 One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Discovered in 1965 on a large earthfast boulder 25m east of the enclosure , the design consists of a series of cup and ringmarks together with a small spiral and two circles that enclose multiple cupmarks. Cup and Ring marks or other Rock Art in Derbyshire

One of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art in the Peak District. Unfortunately the original had to be reburied as it was weathering away, but a fibre glass replica now lies in its place and is well worth seeing.

Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by iantresman : The image shows a compass with a North red arrow running downwards, hence south is up the page. The 'rock' turned out to be fibreglass; apparently one the local university's made a cast a few years ago, and placed it over the original for protection. Our Garmin eTrax Legend provided the following topographical data: 1st reading Longitude: N 53° 15' 13.3" (53.253694) Latitude: W ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Gardoms Edge 1
Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by funsize : A close-up view of the fibre-glass replica slab. It is very convincing until you run your fingers over it and discover it lacks the rough sandstone texture. If you can find it, do visit. There is the standing stone nearby that helps locate it, the petroglyph is to the south of this on the edge of the birch woodland - with direct views east to Birchen Edge.

Gardoms Edge 1
Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by lscollinson : Hard to find and a fair walk too. The original stone is covered by this fibreglass replica to protect from weathering.

Gardoms Edge 1 submitted by postman : As fiber glass replicas go it's not bad.

This reminds me of the Nebra Skydisc which is thought to show the Peiades cluster of stars, although more than seven stars are shown in this rock art.

well worth the walk along the ridge. it''s the other side of the wall to the edge, enclosed by high bracken.

The grid reference given (SK274724) is out by more than 600 metres (visited and verified today...fortunately I had another source so didn't waste too much time). The 10-digit reference from my GPS at the site was SK2728573037 so the 6-digit ref should be SK273730. [corrected]

Rock art located 200m south of standing stone. About 10m outside of enclosure wall. Very distinctive Y shaped tree 3m away from it. Sensational - even the fibreglass replica. A superb landscape. I love this place

A number of archaeological excavations on this rich historical site have uncovered many treasures. You can visit the site of a roundhouse dating back 3000 years, and there is widespread further evidence of bronze and iron age settlement is widespread - including rock art engraved into the gritstone, ring cairns and standing stones.
