Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Yorkshire (North)

Almscliffe Crag (alternatively known as Ormscliffe Crags) can be seen from the A658 (Harrogate Road) near North Rigton. The site is described on The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) web page for Almscliffe Crags, North Rigton, North Yorkshire, which gives clear directions on how to reach the crags, together with the archaeology and history of the area: "this giant outcrop of rock rises out from the meadowlands here like a miniature volcano, visible for many miles all round.  The history and legends surrounding the aged edifice are prodigious and the view from its tops on a fine day is one to be remembered."
The crags also include several stone bowls, including the well known Wart Well, with which there are several folklore tales around the giant named Rombald, who mainly lived on Ilkley Moor. The photo of The Wart Well included here was submitted by andy_h in 2004.
Further information on the Great Almias Cliff Crag nearby (at
SE 2680 4896, 50 metres south of the top of Almscliffe Crags) can be found at Pastscape Monument No. 51452, which tells us about flint implements and microliths found in this rock shelter and now on display at the Pump Room Museum, Harrogate.

Almscliffe Crags submitted by andy_h : The great rock outcrop of Almscliffe Crags. A fantastic high outcrop of millstone grit at the northern side of Wharfedale. Connected by folklore to the Cow and Calf rocks on Ilkley Moor, this place is worth a visit if only for the great views and weirdly weathered bowls. Standing stones reputedly once stood nearby, so it seems very likely that the sacred nature of the crag was recognised by our... (Vote or comment on this photo)
