Froggatt Edge stone circle is set on a flat shelf, overlooking the picturesque Derwent Valley. Often referred to as Stoke Flat, the site is complex, though now sadly quite ruined.

It consists of an embanked stone circle with two entrances exactly opposite, to the north-north-west and south-south-east. Traces of dry-stone walling in the northern entrance suggest that it may have been deliberately blocked at some time in prehistory. The bank is approximately 2m wide, 11.5m internally and 15.5m externally in diameter.

Both entrances are lined with a set of parallel stones, with four remaining in the southern entrance and three in the northern one. Elsewhere four smaller stones are set at the inner edge of the bank. It is clear that there are quite a few missing and may have been as many as sixteen originally. The majority of the stones are of typical Derbyshire height, about 0.5m tall, while the largest stone, flanking one of the entrances, is over 1m in height.

Further to my suggestions regarding solar orientation (see big moor number one circle). The largest stone at stoke flat also has a - very well worn - indentation on the top, if one is to look along this then a " sighting groove" could be possible - in this case the orientation is south-west i.e aligning with the horizon at a point marking the sunset on mid-winters day C 4000 BP. See uploaded photos. It would be quite useful to have an indication as to the arrival of mid-winter - this location, and the arrival of mid-summer - the big moor circle just over the hill...

Stoke Flat is classified as 'access land' so there is full access to this circle and the cairns on the moor. Please use this privilege considerately.
