Stanton Moor 3
Stanton Moor 3 submitted by PaulM : General view of Stanton Moor III (Derbyshire) (Vote or comment on this photo)
Located on slightly higher ground, Stanton Moor III stone circle (or ringcairn) is very similar to IV, but is much larger and more clearly visible. Only partially overgrown by heather, the egg-shaped bank of stones is approximately 19.5m in diameter.

There is, what looks like, a small cairn just off centre, but the interior of the site has been greatly disturbed by rabbits. The circle has two entrances, exactly opposite, to the north and to the south and is the largest on the moor. Both entrances are flanked by stones, the southern one by two stones about 0.5m in height and that to the north by one stone, which is less than 0.5m.

The slightly higher vegetation on the ring makes it just discernible. This is at the southern entrance with its flanking stones.

Known to local Pagans as the "Heather Circle." Over the last few years the heather has grown abundantly and most people who pass by en route to the Nine Ladies wouldn't guess it was there.

Local pagans? You mean new age types who've moved from the city. Lived in Darley my whole life and never met a pagan!

Stanton Moor III is located very close to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle. There is no evidence that there were ever any standing stones, leading some to believe that it may have been a ringcairn rather than a stone circle. A number of interesting finds, such as faience beads have been unearthed by rabbits in the area in recent years.
