Rock Art in Yorkshire (North)

This rock art panel was discovered in July 2015 during a Nidderdale AONB sponsored rock art walk, lead by Dr. Keith Boughey. Recorded in Boughey & Vickerman's "Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding Supplement (2018)", pages 219 to 211 inclusive, the rock is described as a "roughly triangular broken slab of rock presently stood upright in what appears to be the tumbled remains of an ancient wall running along the southern side of Smelt Maria Dike".

The Supplement includes a photograph of the rock in its landscape setting, together with a close up of the motif, and a photograph showing the pecking of the inner and outer rings. Motifs include a larger than usual cup like basin surrounded by two concentric rings, the outer ring appearing to have been broken off along the northern edge of the rock. There are also a series of short, roughly parallel grooves which run from the outermost ring towards the top of the slab, another small possible cup cut into the inner ring, and a possible worn groove towards the base of the slab. The slab measures 0.73m high and 76cms along its broken, northern edge.
