Coate circle
Coate circle submitted by TimPrevett : Coate Circle, wedged between Swindon and the M4 Motorway, visited with permission of the landowner 25/11/07. 5 Stones remain in an arc; 1 additional stone is to the SE towards a tree, and a further stone to the S. There is another stone to the W in a field in front of a barn, visible from the main circle. Close up of 4 of the stones in the arc, outlying stone just to left of tree. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The only remains of the Coate stone circle visible is an arc of 5 flat (fallen?) stones in an arc, 2 outlying stones to the south and south east respectively, and a further stone to the west of the road.

Although the circle itself is, of course, protected by being scheduled, the whole surrounding area is under threat from a huge campus development, which would devastate the rural nature of the site.

More on Coate stone circle here, and initial details of the proposed development here.

Note: The start of a new video series on the Lost Stone Circles of Swindon, Part One is on Coate, also known as Day House Lane and also a link to Cara's video about Winterbourne Basset stone circle

Coate "could be the new Avebury" say campaigners by Andy B on Friday, 20 March 2009
(User Info | Send a Message)
A CONTROVERSIAL area of land in Swindon that is earmarked for a housing development could instead become Swindon’s own “mini-Avebury”, according to campaigners.

The claim comes after ancient stones, which could be part of Swindon’s Neolithic history, were unearthed at Coate.

The two sarsen stones were uncovered by the Highways Agency last week opposite Day House Farm, near the protected Coate Stone Circle.

The find has excited speculation that more historic stones may still lie undiscovered in the area.

Campaigners against a planning application by the Swindon Gateway Partnership to build 1,800 homes and a university campus on land near Coate Water say the development could rob the town of huge potential historic and tourist value.

Jean Saunders, from the Jefferies Land Conservation Trust, said: “There is a real chance here to create almost a mini-Avebury.

“This particular area is steeped in pre-history. We know of a Bronze Age settlement just south of Coate Water, two round barrows opposite Richard Jefferies’ old house at Coate, two stone circles on Day House Farm and lines of stones linking these together with others.

“It would be criminal to surround these ancient relics of the past with modern buildings. Who knows how many more of these old stones lie undiscovered? Can Swindon afford to lose more of its history?

From HOLYWELL.

"This Bronze age site lies beside the road just after the Coate water roundabout. It is made of nine fallen sarsens which form an arc covering about a third of the original circle. This original circle would have been 130 feet in diameter".

Save Coate Blog by TimPrevett on Sunday, 25 November 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
"The Save Coate coalition was set up to protect the environmental, literary and historic qualities of the countryside between Coate Water and the North Wessex Downs near Swindon. The immediate threat is a plan to build 1,800 houses, offices and a university campus for 10,000 students next to Swindonian's "favourite place". However, the University of Bath pulled out of the deal in March 2007. Over 33,000 people have objected to the proposal. This blog records news from July 2005." See the blog HERE.

Coate Circle nr Swindon by TimPrevett on Sunday, 25 November 2007
(User Info | Send a Message)
Took a look here with landowner's permission this morning; there are five stones remaining in an arc; two stones out from the circle to the SE, and one to the S - perhaps outliers? Also another stone across the road next to a trough. The land is owned by the large property opposite, though the paddock is indeed home to two curious horses who were thankfully largely absent for most of my visit.
