Rock Art, Cairn Fields and Ancient Settlements in Yorkshire (North)

Askwith Moor is one of a number of moors in the area that have a number of rock-art stones, cairn fields and ancient settlements. There are about 30 carvings on this moor alone including the 'Manstone' and 'Womanstone'.

For rock art, Boughey & Vickerman have listed stones numbering from 508 to 535 inclusive; because of the number of photographs and descriptions, each rock art stone has been given its own individual site page (see nearby sites below). The settlements and cairn fields also have their own pages.

A few rock art stones have been found since the Boughey & Vickerman catalogue was made, and these have been recorded as Askwith Moor U/R 1 to U/R 4 inclusive.

Rock-Art is located at the following grid references:

Askwith Moor (509)
Askwith Moor (509) submitted by attlebax : West Lane, Askwith. Just over the fence. Correctly described in previous text. Location also correct. Looks like several stones have been dragged to the side of the field. All around a metre across. I decided that the barbed wire fence was a good reason not to get closer. You can actually just catch a glimpse of the stones on Google Earth. (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Askwith Moor (518)
Askwith Moor (518) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1685051117 Described as ‘rock with about 14 cups, all rather sharp & small, probably shot marks’. This is reference number 518 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (517)
Askwith Moor (517) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1673350587 A small rock with 1 clear cup mark. This is reference number 517 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (512)
Askwith Moor (512) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1654250845. A medium sized triangular rock described as having ‘2 cups on E side & 1 on lower W sloping side, clear broad circular groove apparently at NW corner’. There are shot marks on this stone & the cup marks could well be earlier bullet wounds. This is reference number 512 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

askwith moor (Standing Stone)
askwith moor (Standing Stone) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1661150818 This stone is about 70cm high & has a central indentation. It’s difficult to determine whether it’s a cup or shot mark. This has not been referenced by Boughey & Vickerman in the publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’. (5 comments)

Askwith Moor (U/R 2)
Askwith Moor (U/R 2) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1696650678 A large diamond shaped rock with 3 possible cup marks. The most distinct cup is central in this picture, the other 2 are on the east & south vertical faces. This has not been referenced by Boughey & Vickermans in the publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (U/R 3)
Askwith Moor (U/R 3) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1741650763 A rock with 1 possible small cup mark. This rock is about 4 meters west of a large carved rock ref 533. It has not been referenced by Boughey & Vickerman in ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’ & does not appear on DEFRAs Magic as a scheduled monument. It could be a shot mark, but looked too worn for that. (2 comments)

Askwith Moor (531 & 532)
Askwith Moor (531 & 532) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1740450751 A small rock with 1 visible cup mark. There are 3 small rocks with 1 cup mark within a few meters of each other. I could only find this one. Therefore, this could be 530, 531 or 532 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (526)
Askwith Moor (526) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1728551048 A small square rock described by Boughey & Vickerman as ‘ a layered rock with distinctive triangular and rectangular layering, part of possible cairn remains. 1 shallow cup in centre & possibly a 2nd to NE’. This is ref number 526 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (525)
Askwith Moor (525) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1727851040 A fairly large rock which has definite 4 cups, might be a few others too. This is ref number 525 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (533)
Askwith Moor (533) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1742150762 A large rock which has 2 cups with a single ring, each ring has a groove leading from it over the edge of the rock. A number of other cups have also been carved. This is ref number 533 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (524)
Askwith Moor (524) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1717950465 One of two stones with carvings built into Grouse butt 3/7. This particular stone is in the south base of the butt and is described by Boughey & Vickerman as having ‘2 large shallow cups in North facing side’, you’re looking at the north facing side & it would appear that only 1 large deep cup is obvious. This is ref number 524 in Boughey & Vicke...

Askwith Moor (523)
Askwith Moor (523) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1717850467 One of two stones with carvings built into Grouse butt 3/7. This particular stone is in the north base of the butt and has 2 possible cups marks. Because of its location these markings could also be shot marks. This is ref number 523 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’.

Askwith Moor (520)
Askwith Moor (520) submitted by rich32 : ‘Woman Stone’ Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1710350541 This carving consists of a cup with a ring and various grooves coming off the ring to give the appearance of a person. Situated near to 'The Manstone' & having grooves that give the appearance of breasts its been dubbed ‘The Woman Stone’. Being a true gent and wanting to save her modesty I kept this carving clothed from the neck downw...

Askwith Moor (534)
Askwith Moor (534) submitted by rich32 : Askwith Moor, North Yorks SE1754550283 A medium sized rock with 7+ cups marks This is ref number 534 in Boughey & Vickermans ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’

Askwith Moor(settlements)
Askwith Moor(settlements) submitted by rich32 : Hut Circle or Cairn - SE1735550905. A few stones can just be seen poking through the moss & heather. Although its difficult to make out in this photo, a definite circluar form could be seen. Its similar size to other hut circles on the moor, was on flat land & in close proximity to other scattered remains and cup marked rocks. I couldn't swear for sure that it's a hut circle but its old.
