Long Barrow in Wiltshire. An oval barrow with flanking ditches. A burial chamber was found somewhere within the mound in 1880, apparently enclosing an inner ring of sarsens. Access: Situated about 600 metres from the road, the lane is a Byway so is easy to walk. Opposite a small quarry is a foot path, follow this keeping an eye to the left - the barrow is in the woods, be careful.

West Woods Long Barrow
West Woods Long Barrow submitted by hamish : It is really quite large, must have been something to see in its day. Excavations in the late 19th century reveiled a central cairn within the barrow covering a Dolmen. There was no pottery or human remains.

The long barrow was partially excavated in 1880. In the 1920s, A. D. Passmore recorded the recollections of one of the participants.
“A trench was cut from the north side into what was thought to be the centre of the tumulus. At this point a small cairn of small sarsen stones was reached. In the centre of this was a dolmen consisting of four upright stones (the spaces between which were packed large flints) and a capstone covering them, all of sarsen. The large capstone was levered off, as much as the six men could do, and inside was found to contain black matter, my informant was unable to say of what nature. He did not see any bones or pottery. The inside of the dolmen was about 6ft by 3ft., its longer axis coinciding with that of the barrow. As it contained no relics it was left undisturbed, the capstone replaced in its old position, and the excavation filled in.” Passmore, WANHM, v 42 (1922-24), p. 367.
If accurate then this chamber would appear to be relatively unique. There are of course several possibilities including that the cromlech predated the barrow, that it was at the end of a substantial passage, or that it was a secondary burial.
