The Norbury Cross
The Norbury Cross submitted by Sunny100 : The Norbury Cross in Derbyshire, at SK.126424. Close-up of the shaft showing a figure in a panel. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross at Norbury, Derbys, at SK.126424. Inside the 15th century church of St Mary and St Barlok at Norbury, by the River Dove, 3 miles N of Rocester, Derbyshire, stands a very interesting 10th century Anglo Saxon Cross Shaft. The shaft is highly decorated with interlacing and, best of all an odd looking figure in a panel. Some think this could be St Barlok, but he was a Celtic saint and not Anglo Saxon.

The cross-shaft is ornately carved with interlacing on three sides and what is probably ropework at the edges. There is a hint of Northumbrian design-work here. It is said to date somewhere from between the 9th and 11th centuries. St Barlok is a rare dedication to a 7th century Irish saint. He is said to be identical with St Barruc, (ie St Finbarrus of Cork). However, his dedications are generally in S.Wales and Cornwall, and certainly not here in Derbyshire. So this is very odd to say the least.

There are some other fragments of a cross, but nothing on a par with the one I have picked out. The church is quite nice to look at, when it is open.
