Anne T visited on 20th Jan 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Corby's Bridge Settlement: This site was quite difficult to make out, as there were stones and banks everywhere, with trees and shrubs growing between them. On the way down the slope from the rock shelter, we thought we saw the foundations of two old buildings (the stones were aligned in a shape), but were too moss covered to really distinguish. Walking further down the slope, as it becomes gentler, there are obvious traces of low, circular banks with stones in them. From this point there are several lines of stones running north east to south west down the slope. The best evidence of structures is at the south/south eastern end of the settlement, were there are stony walls, with aligned stones up to about 1.5m in height. There was a fence in between us and the southern part of the settlement, with no gate through, so we contented ourselves with leaning over the fence and getting photos.

Corby's Bridge
Corby's Bridge submitted by Anne T : The most obvious structures within this settlement were over a modern barbed wire fence. According to Pastscape, this outer enclosure measures about 105m in diameter. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Northumberland

This native fort with multiple ramparts and associated enclosures near Corby's Bridge is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 6628. It is dated to the
pre-Roman Iron Age/Romano British and has two distinct phases of occupation.

Today, the site is difficult to interpret, but there are various stony banks and lines of stones indicating structures, some of which have been robbed out.

Whilst visiting the rock shelter on the slope above, it's worth the short walk down to take a look. Various modern fences cross the settlement, and it was not possible to view the southern end, which had the largest remaining structures, during our visit.

Corby's Bridge
Corby's Bridge submitted by Anne T : This was the stony foundations of a circular structures, possibly one of the hut circles mentioned in the Pastscape record? Everything was so moss-covered it was a little difficult to tell, even though we'd visited a number of this type of settlement before. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Corby's Bridge
Corby's Bridge submitted by Anne T : A line of low-lying/spread stones running roughly north-east/south west across the field. As these stones were almost in a straight line, we wondered if this was part of a tumbled stone wall, rather than the circular structures described in Pastscape. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Corby's Bridge
Corby's Bridge submitted by Anne T : Signs of one of the stony banks within the settlement, now largely buried under bracken and a modern trackway across the field. It was a good job we visited at this time of year when the bracken was dead, or we'd not have been able to pick out the banks. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Corby's Bridge
Corby's Bridge submitted by Anne T : Walking along the vague track from the rock shelter up the slope, these stones are the first indication that there were structures here. (Vote or comment on this photo)
