Round Barrow(s) in Derbyshire

Bronze Age bowl barrow situated on the north west end of Eldon Hill with fine views in all directions including Mam Tor and Gautries Hill. The barrow is 16x15m and 1.5m high, with a cairn on top. Excavated by Bateman and others with numerous skeletons and artefacts found: perforated bone, burnt flint, decorated pottery, horse bone, quartz pebbles and a jet bead. See Magic 23265.

Access from Eldon Lane (SK11467978) in Old Dam just north of Peak Forest. Parking easy. Eldon Lane ends in open country (right to roam). Keep the wall to the left past the lovely woods and straight up the hill, passing Eldon Hole, Derbyshire's largest pothole at 50m.

Eldon Hill Stone Circle submitted by colint : Panorama showing Eldon Hill from the East. The site was reinstated after quarrying 1950 and deep opencast mining 2004, the top of the hill probably lowered. The opencast mine was in the area in the green expanse in the middle. On the horizon is Shackleton (left) Toy Top (middle) and the start of Brussleton (right). The photo is taken from the Trig point at Old Eldon. (Vote or comment on this photo)
