wildtalents visited on 1st Aug 2001 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 On one of our visits to the village, in August 2001, the Cove was caged within some Heras fence or something of the type as works to stabilise the stones was being carried out. Or had been carried out. I think on at least one other visit a similar structure was in place too. So I chose a photograph taken in, I think, 2004. The mighty Cove stones are a monument in themselves. I might be dreaming this but I'm sure someone had a chicken run or a barn built up against one of the stones, maybe even as recently as Keiller's 'renovation'. (I'm moving house soon and my books are all packed in cartons but seem to remember there's a sketch, one of Stukeley's I think, in one of them. When the dust settles I'll see if I can find it.)
Much as I love Avebury as a whole, and the Cove in particular, my favourite part of the monument is the so-called Z feature, that fairly straight row of stones near the old Methodist church. How I wish the Obelisk stone was still there, not that vile concrete marker.
mdensham visited on 1st Jan 1976 I lived and worked at the Red Lion for two years from 1976-1977. I was introduced to Faith Vatcher, the resident archaeologist of the day who spent five afternoons teaching me the basics of archaeology in her room above the Keiller museum. I was great friends with Heather Peak-Garland who worked at the pub too. She introduced me to Karin Fleisher, an artist from Berlin who spent much of the summer drawing the stones and the church.

These stones are some of the oldest in Avebury henge and John Aubrey catalogued (actually drew) the 3rd stone as in position when he visited here. He also reported that locals where felling and destroying the stones as to use in building works. As can be seen these are two large and very significant stones.
