Re: Mill Pot Cave by Anonymous on Monday, 30 May 2016
Hello
My name is Anthony King and I along with Peter Turner and David Pountney started the excavation of Mill Pot at Easter 1962, at the time I was 13 years old. Almost as soon as we started digging we began to find thick, heavy pieces of pottery and bones, Bert Bentley from Keele University was at Wettonmill the next day and he encouraged us to continue digging. We were looking for a new cave system and in no way be called archaeologists though we found the finds very interesting. We continued digging and found bones and pottery all the way down. Various people worked at the site and I can remember one weekend when Paul Deakin found a human lower jawbone which was very exciting. Yes we used to pull the clay out with old oil drums on the end of a rope. Eventually we excavated the cave down to about 30 feet pulling out bones all the way. The digging of the cave was very ad hoc without any real recording of finds or their location in the deposits. I did a CRG grade 3 survey of the cave at the time but where that is now I have no idea. The Phoenix group disbanded in 1965 and we did no more excavation there. In my opinion this site would still reward excavation by serious archaeologists because we were still finding bones when we stopped, the downside would be a very difficult place to work in a very restricted space. I now live in Australia and if anyone would like anymore information my email address is brum024975@gmail.com

I was one of the team of cavers who excavated Mill pot in the early 60s. It was a difficult task as there was only room for one person at the excavation face, and the spoil was sent up in a metal cylinder. another problem was the multitude of midges which bit one constatly, we all smoked pipes I remember to keep them at bay

Finding your site brought back memories, I was one of those from the Phoenix Old Mines & Cave Research Group, from Burton-on-Trent who excavated the cave. I remember there was only room for one person at a time, and we hauled the red clay out in tubular containers. the flies were a nightmare, one of us had to sit at the cave mouth smokig a pipe to keep them away! I believe that the pottery we found is in Stoke museum. I seem to remember finding a female upper jaw amongst the bones of ox, cave bear and other creatures.
