Chambered Tomb with Long Mound in Gloucestershire

This is a well-preserved long mound. Traces of the burial chamber can be found to the eastern end.

Reputedly the largest Bronze Age Long Barrow/Chambered Tomb in Gloucestershire this giant is 300ft (85m) long 70ft (21m) wide and 11ft (3.5m) high orientated E/W and reportedly unexcavated (though my photo of the eastern end might suggest otherwise). Certainly it seems both ends have been disturbed - it has five Round Barrows to the Northeast as neighbours forming a Barrow Cemetery.

It features little in the County History being ignored by G Witts in 1883 and later in the BGAS 1989 review by Darvill and Grinsell (but both allude to it elsewhere).

It has been mentioned however by:-
(a) OGS Crawford in his Long Barrows of the Cotswolds 1925 No 20
(b) O'Neil and Grinsell in BGAS 1960 Vol 79 p.76
(c) Daniel/Corcoran/Darvill/Grinsell in the County Gazetteer GLO69
(d) On the pastscape website No 327151 Gloucestershire/Cotswolds/Coln St Dennis

The Barrow is in a superb setting about 1mile SE of the Fosse Way but not easy to get to being a circuitous hike from a bridleway.
