drolaf visited on 13th Sep 2022 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 3 a lovely little 6 stone ring, that really demonstrates that the neolithic/bronze age was not all about massive fancy sites involving lots of people. the small sites emphasise the personal, a small group of people enacting possibly the same belief system as elsewhere. The stone hexagon at Fancarl top is a fantastic example of a 6 stoner, the most basic of the form, but the spectacular location gives it gravitas. A larger earthfast plus 5 added stones, three stones are cubic blocks. South is dominated by the hills and crags of Simon seat, and Burnstall fell. Looking west you can see the hillsides of Dumpit stone ring and Yarnbury henge 3 1/2 miles away.

Stone Circle in West Yorkshire

This Bronze Age stone circle comprises 5 stones and is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 48461 which tells us the monument comprises: "five free-standing stones, and a large inset boulder survives at SE 0643 6304 ... Raistrick suggests that a possible second circle exists at SE 0640 6313. This position is occupied by a group of boulders which appear to be naturally placed. A choice of ten stones will, however, produce an approximate circle 5.5m in diameter."

The stone circle is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1008781, which adds: "The monument includes a well preserved stone circle which is situated on a slight north facing slope at Fancarl Top. It includes five free standing gritstones and a large inset boulder. The average dimensions of the gritstones are 0.7m by 0.6m by 0.8m high. The large inset boulder measures 1.5m by 1.5m by 0.8m high and lies at the southern extent of the circle. The circle has a overall diameter of approximately 10m." There is no mention of a second circle.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also feature a page for this site - see their entry for Fancarl Top, Appletreewick, North Yorkshire, which contains photographs, directions for finding the site, a ground plan which includes the location of missing stones, and a brief archaeology & history. TNA add that the site was originally named Fancairn, a possible derivation from Windy Cairn.

Appletreewick submitted by stuhyde : The Stone circle at Appletreewick is well worth the walk up from the village. It is however only accessible past the small quarry off the main road. It is not visible form the road. The circle is about 70M to the North West of the top of the quarry. The area has other large stones that are similar in size to the Circle stones. Appletreewick also has a great spot for swimming.

Finally visited this site - having lived in North Yorkshire for 45 years and not previously done so, you might say about time. Very satisfying circle; offroad parking possible not far down the hill towards Dibble's Bridge, though I walked from Grimwith. To me the 'possible second circle' of Raistrick seemed very clear and in fact I spotted that first. Attempted to photograph it but not easy and nothing worth posting here was achieved. 50 yards from the main circle in a SW-ish direction, about 25 yards across, stones earthfast but small, 6 inches high or less. Granted there are lots of small boulders in the area but a clear regular arc seemed quite convincing - but what do I know.

This is a very small but lovely circle, and easily accessible for the able-bodied. I'd definitely give it more ambience - although it is close to the road, it is not visible from it or vice versa and the views are indeed stunning. Watch out for the thistles though.

Great little circle and some stunning views too!
Find the disused quarry by the gate on the B6265 (SE 063 629 approx.), walk past the quarry into the field, keep the drystone wall on your right, wander off to your left slightly and it's before you!
A couple of the stones look like land-fast boulders, the rest look more like ones planted on end. My mate reckoned the place is a fake. I loved it!

Appletreewich Stone Circle Decoded by Anonymous on Saturday, 24 November 2001
The information for the six stones and 9.1 metre diameter circle was taken from a web site. As the metric system is completely irrelevant and meaningless the diameter is 30ft. See my Down Tor decoded.

The first thing to be done was to ascertain that six stones is the original number, evidence will have been left. As you can see on the drawing there is a long mound 6000ft to the SW. In code language this is 6.
The circumference is 94.24777961ft, now this is jackpot news because it happens to be 30Pi and the offset of the Sphinx from the great pyramid in degrees. So I know I'm on the right track.
Now this circumference /6 = 5Pi. Interesting, may come in useful some where.
Lets look at the global location. Its unique address on the Matrix.

54deg. 3min. 48sec. latitude.
33deg. 4min. 12.33789115sec. Longitude from Giza Prime (31deg. 8min. 00.8sec. east)
54x3x48 = 7776 (watch this number)
33x4x12.33789115 = 1628.601632.
Now divide and 4.774648292 becomes the Global Grid...
