Ferndown Town Common
Ferndown Town Common submitted by Gedv1 : Great Barrow 1 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Dorset

A massive barrow, fox and badger holed but totally impressive for its semi rural/urban location. Clear evidence of ditch all around.

See also Great Barrow 2. Only 75m away is another very impressive barrow, slightly out of the woodland setting as in barrow 1, being scrub grassland. Also evidence of surrounding ditch.

There are several other barrows on Town Common, one being very central to the common under a trig point, but it is greatly eroded compared with Barrows 1 and 2. The O/S map lists 'Great Barrow' on the common but at a position north east to the actual tumuli.

Across the common, which is the nearest open heathland to Ferndown, there are numerous late medieval earthworks and walling, possibly due to gravel extraction, but there are further barrows preserved, if you can call it that, in the local housing estates.

Interesting to think that a part of this area once held Ferndown Zoo which was the largest tourist day-trip attraction outside of Bournemouth. It closed in the early 60's and that area has now been built upon, but on a time, one could have sat atop of these barrows, listening to the late night mewing of great cats, which was a local curiousity.
