Blagdon Hill tumuli
Blagdon Hill tumuli submitted by JimChampion : March 2005. Two bowl barrows on Blagdon Hill. The horse is standing on the bank of Grim's Ditch (whick merges with the smaller barrow) and the individual trees on the far left of the photo are growing on the Bokerley Dyke. Round Barrow(s) in Dorset

The two Bronze Age bowl barrows lie on a north west to south east alignment on Blagdon Hill, immediately west of Grim's Ditch and the larger Bokerley Dyke. The barrow ditches are contiguous and the mound of the eastern barrow merges with the bank of Grim's Ditch. The western barrow has a mound 17m in diameter and up to 3m high. A slight depression 0.3m deep and up to 3.5m wide marks the partly infilled ditch from which material was quarried during the construction of the mound. The eastern mound is 12m in diameter and up to 1m high. The encircling ditch of this barrow is also largely infilled but is visible as a depression 1m wide and 0.2m deep at the south side of the mound. Both mounds show slight irregularities which are probably the result of antiquarian excavation. [source]

Access The barrows are just south of the bridleway/track from Martin to Blagdon Hill and Cranborne. Park at one of the Martin Down National Nature Reserve car parks: the nearest is at grid ref SU058192 at the end of Sillens Lane (from the village centre of Martin). Head SE uphill, through the gap in the Bokerly Dyke earthworks and the barrows are obvious on the left in a privately owned field.
