Mysteron visited on 4th Feb 2024 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Park at the turn to a narrow lane, just before the cattle grid. Just follow the road down to the derelict farmhouse with the caravans and it's easily visible in the adjacent field. Nobody lives here and a fence was already flattened down when I visited so access shouldn't be a problem. My feeling is this was once a more substantial site, as there are two very large stones built into the gate just down from the site. One of them is holed. Perhaps Heathcote "excavated" here and left it in a state? The main stone aligns roughly with some other mounds and stones going southeast along the Dove.

Standing Stones in Derbyshire

The site is 3km east of the A53 Leek-Buxton road from where it is signposted to Brandside. The Brand End standing stones are situated on private land immediately south of the semi-derelict Brand End Farm that terminates the road from the A53. The site overlooks a deep valley 0.5km to the east and south east backed by High Edge in the distance. To the southeast are the distinctive profiles of Hollins Hill, Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. There are extensive views across falling terrain of the Dove and Manifold vallies to the south and southwest.

The main standing stone is approximately 2.2m high, roughly square section and tapering from about 0.5m to 0.2m at the top. The SW face bears a O.S. benchmark cut about 1.5m from ground level and showing considerable weathering. Scattered stones surround the base of the standing stone.
This stone is on the highest point of the hill which appears to be slightly elevated and domed within a 5m radius. It is not suggested that this is the site of a tumulus but the idea bears further investigation in the context of other tumulii within a 5km radius.
Approximately 35 paces E (~27m) is a smaller, blade-like standing stone aligned edge-on towards the main stone.

Brand End standing stones
Brand End standing stones submitted by astronomer : The outlier is about 27m from the main stone. Their alignment, seen in this view from the outlier, is 260 degrees magnetic. Note that the obviously very old stone wall field boundaryfrom the south finishes before it crosses the line between the stones. This suggests that the wall, c 18thC (?), postdates the erection of the standing stones. (1 comment)

Brand End is the area around the stones. Brand End Farm does terminate the road further on, but the farm in the shot is Shop Farm.
