Re: Ebsbury by Anonymous on Monday, 23 May 2011
I walk around Grovley woods a lot and explored the area of Ebsbury today. The settlement area has some quite deep ditches left, but is no longer complete. The rest of the Down has a lot of earthworks presumably for agriculture. There were some interesting E shaped areas which were well defined and cut into the hillside. Corrals for animals or more sheltered bedding areas for plants, to protect them from the Wind? It was very windy today and just getting off the higher ground into these cutting made quite a difference. There seemed to be some evidence of Dew Ponds but these may have been newer features, historically! Finally there were 3 close parallel ditches of about 6ft deep and several 100 yards long with no apparent agricultural or military functions; Except that they may have been built as a statement to anyone approaching from the North, down the Till valley to the junction with the Wylye. This is directly opposite the Down and surrounding field systems. Much of the site is now part of a nature reserve but is easily accessed by a track from the Cemetery at Wishford. To the west is Grovley Castle, on the next spur, which is well defined but separated by a steep valley from the site. It would be intersting to know if any work has been done on what is a large site?
