Natural Stone / Glacial Erratic in Yorkshire (West)

The Rocking Stone is a gritstone outcrop on Warley Moor. On one end of the outcrop there is a perched stone that must be the rocking stone, but it had already ceased to rock when described by John Watson in 1775 (The History and Antiquities of the Parish of Halifax, in Yorkshire, T. Lowndes, London, 1775, republished by E.J. Morten, Manchester, 1973, p. 26).

At the other end, there is a passage that can be crawled through, now used as a shelter by sheep. Watson maintained that the passage was used for druidic initiation rites. This would not be very significant, were it not for the traditions surrounding a crawlable hole in another gritstone outcrop, Ponden Kirk, a few miles away.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this legendary rock - see their entry for he Rocking Stone, Warley Moor, Halifax, West Yorkshire, which gives directions for finding this outcrop, together with photographs, a brief archaeology & history, a 1775 and a 1913 drawing of the rocking stone and a recent photograph of some "dubious cup-markings".

I've renamed this page Rocking Stone (Warley Moor) (from just Rocking Stone) as it was picking up photographs and images from other sites. There doesn't appear to be a photograph or drawing that attaches to this page. I'll see if I can find one. Thanks.
