Powburn 1
Powburn 1 submitted by SolarMegalith : The main motif - a cup with two rings (photo taken on March 2013). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Rock Art in Northumberland

This cup-and-ring marked rock was discovered in a quarry near Powburn and moved to Ingram, where it stands in front of Northumberland National Park visitor centre. The main motif is a well-preserved cup with two rings. Near the edge of a rock there is a smaller motif of a cup with single ring.

For more information see England's Rock Art entry for ERA-603 Powburn 1, which includes both NADRAP's and Beckensall's descriptions, photographs, a sketch of the rock and its motifs, plus photogrammetry, a VRML model and media from the Beckensall Archive.

The original Beckensall record can be found at Internet Archive: Beckensall 323 Powburn.

This rock art is classed as being 'in a museum' but is sited in front of the building.

From Anne T:

Ingram is a pretty little village sitting on the edge of Northumberland National Park and on the River Breamish.

This stone sits immediately outside the front door of the Muddy Boots cafe and gift shop (previously the Tourist Information Centre, previously the old school) which is right next to the River Breamish. When we visited there were no notes as to where this stone had come from, although the surrounding area was excavated in the 1990s.

Ingram is a good base from which to do the Breamish Valley Hill Fort Trail, which is superb, and relatively easy walking along marked trails. The Trail takes in Ewe Hill, Middle Dean, Cochrane Pike, Wether Hill, Turf Knowe and Brough Law.

The cafe wasn't open when we visited, although I understand that it houses other artefacts from the excavations.
