Choopsie visited on 1st Aug 2022 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 4 We returned to the site and it was quiet. To get to it is easy as you can see the pathway by others. The brackens were quite tall but it was still easy to walk through. The site itself seemed to me to be almost perfect. I’m not a professional but there was no vandalism thankfully. The ambiance here is amazing maybe that’s because not many people visit. It’s definitely a favourite and inspiring place.

SumDoood visited on 20th Jun 2015 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 A fine site to visit. I remain perplexed by the "hillfort" and suspect that the walls and ditches might have formed a processional way. I found that water flows N, S, E & W from the adapted cup and similar marks at the highest point of the rock mass.

The largest carved outcrop in Northern England, this site is in the care of English Heritage and signposted from the road.
Additional information supplied by Drew Parsons in September 2011: The site is 30 metres north from the crossroads and 20 metres into the woods on the western side of the road. The panel is some 18 metres long and is covered in rock art comprising mostly cup and ring marks. Some cup marks and ring marks are very deeply incised into the rock. It is located just below the outer perimeter Roughting Linn Hillfort.
For more information see the Beckensall Archive entry for Roughtin Linn and England's Rock Art ERA-12. The original Beckensall record can be found at Internet Archive: Beckensall 11 Roughting Linn.
The rock as also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 3560 and scheduled as Historic England List ID 1006600. The Journal of Antiquities also features an entry for Roughting Linn, Bar Moor, Ford, Northumberland, which gives background information and a list of sources for further information.
Access to this rock art panel is 'Access by Right of Way'.
Note: The BBC's Countryfile show will feature Roughting Linn on Sunday May 3rd, as mentioned during a chance meeting with a production crew at the rock art panel in the Easter break.
