Anne T visited on 12th Jul 2015 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Corbridge Rock Art Panel at Corbridge Roman Fort, Northumberland: OK, we've lived in this area for 13 years now, and the nearest we've been to this site is to take my daughter for driving lessons as it was good to practice reversing around corners in the quiet cul-de-sacs around here. Having said that, the Romans generally leave me 'cold' as they as so organised, everything is on a huge, grand scale, and having seen one or two forts, you can generally predict the layout of another. Sceptical? Probably. However, the purpose of today's visit was to try to find the rock art panel which appears to just have been 'dumped' within the site; no-one seems sure where it comes from, apart from nearby somewhere. The fort sits on level ground on top of a slope on the north side of the River Tyne, and as there is an old Roman bridge down by the river, this must have been a good place to cross in times gone by. The staff at the kiosk knew nothing about the stone, until I called up an entry on the Modern Antiquarian (sorry, Portal) to show them, then the lady told me it was mentioned in the guided walks, and told me it was on the north side of the roman road (Stanegate) running through the site. After this, it was easy to find, almost at the far side of the site. In the distance, across the fields, the church of St. Andrew's in Corbridge, with its anglo-saxon fragments, can be clearly seen. I did find the strong room, with its set of narrow steps leading down into it, quite fascinating.

Corbridge Rock Art Panel
Corbridge Rock Art Panel submitted by Anne T : Close up of the rock art boulder which sits on the northern side of Stanegate, almost at the eastern end of the Corbridge Roman Fort site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Located within the English Heritage site of Corbridge Roman Fort in Northumberland, this boulder with rock art sits on the northern side of the remains of Stanegate, the road running through the middle of the current site.

Situated almost at the eastern end of the site, this boulder sits on top of a couple of courses of wall. It is oddly out of place, as if it has just been put here for somewhere to keep it, not being dressed as the other pieces of stone on this site are.

The Beckensall Archive record tells us that the art comprises "a four-sided groove with rounded corners (which) encloses a central cup that has an arc formed by linking two small cups with a curved groove. Also enclosed are two large cups joined together to form an oval and seven other cups. The rest of the rock has nine large and some smaller cups. Four of the large cups are placed in a line parallel to the rock edge. The whole surface has been used, and the depth of the motifs is impressive."

For more information see England's Rock Art entry for ERA-715 Corbridge, which includes both NADRAP's and Beckensall's descriptions, Beckensall's Archive notes, photographs, a sketch of the rock and its motifs, plus photogrammetry and media from the Beckensall Archive. The original Beckensall record can be found at Internet Archive: Beckensall 751 Corbridge.

Being an English Heritage site, there are charges to get in. Surprisingly, the guides manning the tills knew nothing about this stone until I showed them an image. It is apparently pointed out in the occasional guided tours of the site, but there is no mention in the official guide or the museum.

Corbridge Rock Art Panel submitted by attlebax : This certainly looks well pre-Roman. I have placed a 12 inch ruler on the stone to show the size of the 'cups'. From the visitor centre it is in the top left corner of the site. (Vote or comment on this photo)
