Stone Circle in Aberdeenshire. The remains of a small circle. They were all removed in 1938 by the late W Grieve, and deposited along the river bank. There are 5 stones at the site but only 3 of these belong to the circle.

Two of the stones stand at the southern and one at the northern side. The stone to the SE measures 3ft 6ins in height and is 2ft 3ins broad. The rounded pillarlike stone to the SW is also 3ft 6ins high but is 1ft 6ins broad. The pointed stone at the northern side is 2ft 4ins high, 1ft 6ins broad. The distance between them suggests that the circle was no more that 20 ft in diameter. The two rounded squat stones in the centre have been added recently.

Of these 5 stones, three were part of the original small circle pictured here.

Circle is located just to the West of the Aldi carpark and between the tarmaced footpath and the river.

The NLS map, to which tyrianterror's link (in above post) refers, shows the stones at the location where the canmore photos were taken (probably in 1917). Curiously, the map shows four stones laid along a curve but the photos show five stones in a different arrangement and Professor Ritchie (the photographer) says two of the stones he photographed are modern additions. This site, on the south side of Ythan Terrace, is now occupied by a car-park and a house.

The NLS (National Library of Scotland ) maps illustrate on their '6 Inch to a Mile' series the site of the circle, at least approximation.Grand sources of lost info & even better if like me yer into maps.

The paragraph at the top of this page beginning "Two of the stones stand at the southern . . ." refers to the circle as it was before relocation to the present site, it does not describe it as it stands today. The Canmore photos show that it used to be rather small and unimpressive; nowadays it is noticeably smaller in diameter and height, poorly situated (so close to the river it will be inundated) and even more self-effacing: it just looks pathetic.
Here is the Street View of the site. although the circle is invisible in the grass. If you look at open green space in the middle of the picture you will see that along the back there is a path running left to right, with a lamp-post at each end and a green park bench in the middle. The circle is immediately in front of the park bench, lying in what looks like an area of cut grass but which is actually over a foot tall, enough to hide the stones. Viz -

Found the Ellon circle quite easily ..... 30 yds from the back of the TESCO car-park beside the riverside walk ..... There are still 6 stones standing with one more almost buried ...... It's about 18ft across - with what looks like the remains of a recumbant ..

This is not thought to be a 'real' recumbent stone circle. It is almost definately not in its original position
