Long Barrow in Cheshire

According to local prehistorian Gordon Rowley, this site at Bartomley Farm near Wincle could be the remains of a possible long barrow.

A natural spur of rock forms part of the mound, but the area around it has been adapted to form a long barrow. Some years ago a flint blade was found half a metre down in the eastern side.

A round barrow also lies somewhere near to the farm where antiquarians reported that 'gold rings, chains, fibulae etc' were unearthed.

Access

Follow the footpath which leads from the back of the Ship Inn in Wincle across the field (passing by a hill which looks remarkably like a miniature Silbury) through the trees down over the river and back up. Once you have crossed the stile at the top, the mound can be seen to the right in the field just before the house.

Does show on Environment Agency lidar (icon next to that for CamRA), trending NE-SW. It seems more irregular than other confirmed long barrows

Tradition has it that a battle was fought nearby, possibly on the hillside closer to the Ship Inn, between Roman soldiers and the local Celtic tribe.
