Anne T visited on 28th Aug 2017 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 2 Access: 4 Old Man's Grave, Meadows Edge Road, Near Blanchland: We originally intended to go to Blanchland to look at a holy well marked on the OS map, not far from the town square, but the village show was on and it was impossible to park. We drove on across to the moors, intended to stop at a boundary stone on the way to Old Man’s grave, but the roads were too busy to stop.
I was expecting a cairn, but this is a small, relatively modern boundary marker, sited between two footpaths, and at the corner of a modern fence.
Not impressed, but stopped to photograph it anyway. Certainly stunning views, and I’m guessing at some time in the past this might have been a cairn with a way marker on top, or by, especially with it being located just up the hill from where Bale Hill turns into Meadows Edge, and where two different trackways led off the north east and south west off Meadows Edge across the moorland.
With a name like 'Old Man's Grave', especially in this prominent position between two moors, I expected this to be a cairn, but no. Recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 959295, they think it is simply a probable boundary marker.
It sits on the boundary of Hunstanworth and Edmundbyers parishes. The OS map, which clearly marks this stone, shows a line of other boundary markers heading eastwards and southwards, although we didn't see them because of the heather, or perhaps because the modern fence-line hid them. Unlike it's neighbour, Dead Friar's Stone, it is not scheduled.
Sitting immediately next to the corner of a modern fence (it might even have been disturbed by installation of the corner post), the stone is marked CT on its west face and DC on the east. According to Historic England, the CT might stand for Crewe Trustees (similar lettering on Dead Friar's Stone); the DC might be for Dean and Chapter (of Durham).
