Gin Clough Farm
Gin Clough Farm submitted by PaulM : Ginclough standing stone is a scheduled ancient monument located beside the B5470 in Rainow (near Macclesfield in Cheshire).NGR: SJ95607630 - a dumpy unexciting little stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone in Cheshire

For the curious, this rather unimpressive prehistoric standing stone sits at the junction of the ‘Macclesfield Road’ and the track to Cutlers Farm (a public right of way) at Ginclough in Rainow. This large stone or glacial erratic, 0.9m high and 0.9m deep at the base, is not typical of other standing stones, being neither needle-like nor imposing. It is short, dumpy and crammed into the corner of a field by a busy road surrounded by redundant agricultural equipment! Nevertheless it is scheduled.

Viewing

Travellers who regularly pass along the B5470 (Macclesfield Road) in Rainow may be completely unaware that just south of the hamlet of Ginclough is a standing stone right next to the road. It is not easy to see as its crown only just peeps over a dry-stone so if you blink you will miss it!

Parking is a problem here; best pull over very tight next to the road (unless having walked some distance). The stone is right next to a footpath.
