Standing Stone (Menhir) in Aberdeenshire

The monument is known locally as The Hanging Stone and comprises a standing stone of prehistoric date, visible as an upstanding monument. The monument is situated within pasture on the summit of Gallows Hill at about 70m OD. The standing stone sits at the junction of three stone dyke field boundaries, which are built around it, and comprises a large oblong orthostat measuring c 2.3m high by c 0.6m square.

The monument probably relates to ritual activity of Neolithic or Bronze Age date.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the standing stone and an area around it within which related material may be expected to be found. It is irregular in shape, with maximum dimensions of 3.5m N-S by 2.5m E-W as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
