Barrow Cemetery in Gloucestershire

Two ruined barrows, Camp Barrow North and Camp Barrow South lie at SO91380902 and SO91370908. The remains of a chambered tomb can be found at the southern end of the Northern Long Barrow. It is unclear whether the Southern Barrow was originally long or circular in shape. Early references suggest it may have had a horned forecourt to the north.

Scratchbury Camp barrows
Scratchbury Camp barrows submitted by JimChampion : Two-photo composite showing the ditched bowl barrow in the southwest corner of Scratchbury Camp (at grid reference ST91024410). The barrow was partially excavated in the 19th century. In the far distance towards the left is the prominent outline of Cley Hill. Battlesbury Hill can be seen to the right of the barrow mound. Scratchbury Camp barrows
Scratchbury Camp barrows submitted by JimChampion : Two-photo composite showing the ditched bowl barrow in the southwest corner of Scratchbury Camp (at grid reference ST91024410). It is on a southwest-facing slope. The metal prong sticking out of the barrow is a marker to indicate that the barrow should not be dug into - the hillfort is on the edge of the MoD's Salisbury Plain training area. Camp Barrow North
Camp Barrow North submitted by hamish : SO914091.Gloucestershire.Nr Bisley. From Painswick travel east to the B4070,at the junction turn left at the fork take a sharp right and at the next fork stay right. You will come to a village called The Camp. Go through the village and up the hill,at the brow of the hill find a parking place,on the right is the Barrow. It is very ruined and at the north end are the remains of the portal. Camp Barrow
Camp Barrow submitted by SolarMegalith : Remains of a burial chamber with a fallen capstone lies near the northern barrow. If it was realy a long barrow like the OS map claims, big part of it is destroyed now.

Scratchbury Camp barrows
Scratchbury Camp barrows submitted by JimChampion : Look closely and you may be able to make out two very slight bowl barrows in this photograph. They are at grid reference ST914444, just inside the inner rampart on the northeast edge of Scratchbury Camp. Both were partially excavated in the 19th century, and a cremation and bone objects were found in the larger of the two barrows. In the distance on the right is Middle Hill, with its strip lynchet...

Re: Camp Barrow by Anonymous on Friday, 27 November 2020
Location hard by a B road detracts from ambience. Frequented by grazing cows. Looks a bit of a mess. As a complete novice with this sort of thing I used to think it was overgrown recent mounds of rubbish/soil by a farmer, until I looked on map and had a proper look, and saw the various entrance stones etc. Moderately impressed!
