Wareham Walls
Wareham Walls submitted by TimPrevett : Looking up to the outside of the West Wall of Wareham. As I child I walked along these walls to the nearby primary and secondary schools - the walls seemed even more imposing than they do now; and they still seem imposing. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Massive Saxon defensive earthworks surround the ancient town of Wareham.

Part of the great system of defences erected aganst future Danish attacks by King Alfred after the Battle of Edington in 878.

Wareham Walls
Wareham Walls submitted by TimPrevett : Looking to a part of the walls on the north west side known as the Cock Pit, where cock fighting used to take place. The lower part of the ditch here also becomes very water logged at times, making for a pond adjacent the path that curves around the health centre.

Wareham Walls
Wareham Walls submitted by TimPrevett : Giving an idea of the elevation on the N Walls; with the River Piddle in the foreground, the town was well defended indeed. Looking to the NW.
