Stone Circle in Lancashire

This ring of five stones (3 are visible in the photo and we are standing on the other 2) lies in a field at NGR; 88473276 on Worsthorne Moor near Burnley. There are also three other half buried stones in a row close by at NGR88473273.

Update February 2017: This monument is classed as either a "Bronze Age ring cairn (or possibly an embanked stone circle)" in Pastscape's record for Monument No. 45322. The site is also scheduled as Historic England List ID 109112 (Ring cairn on Slipper Hill), their short entry reading: "The monument includes a ring cairn located on Slipper Hill a short distance south west of Hell Clough. It includes a slightly oval ring of six stones which originally formed part of a ring bank. These stones, the largest of which is 0.45m wide by 0.2m high, enclose an area measuring 11.7m NNE-SSW by 10.4m ENE-WSW. Limited antiquarian investigation of the monument in 1887 located calcined human bones".

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for the Worsthorne Hill Stone Circle, Near Burnley, Lancashire, which includes photographs (including one of a possible cup marked stone in the circle), directions for finding the site and a description. The Journal adds: "there is a faint earthen circle, but this feature is now difficult to make out". The Journal also includes a list of reference sources for more information.

I visited the site yesterday and couldn't find the circle amongst the rubble. The wild flowers were awesome though.

No the stones haven't been removed. There is a circular area in the next field that is used for flying model aircraft. To find the stones go to the field north of the one with that area in it. You should follow the track along the eastern wall, walking in a northerly direction. When the track bifurcates (near a derelict blue tractor), take the left fork. Go about 20 yards down the track then go off the track to your left (in the direction of the farmhouse). You will find the circle there. It is small, but charming.

All of the stones here have been removed, by a local model aircraft club :(

The stones have not been removed, whoever you are, I own the land. Possibly try looking for the stone circle in the next field, where, amazingly, its always been ;)

On a recent visit, we found five stones in a ring at GR: SD88473276, three of which were quite obvious and two of which were almost buried. This circle is located next to a farmers tip and the area is littered with metal pipes and an old steam roller! There were also three other half buried stones in a row close by at GR: SD88483273.

    Hello Vicky,
I've just found your article on Slipper Hill about the Ring Stones and "farmers tip."

Please don't blame the "real" farmers, this mess was made by someone running rings round the council and tipping on one appeal after another while pretending to farm.

    A disgraceful sight.
