Round Barrow in Cheshire

This bowl barrow at Bearhurst Farm was examined by Gordon Rowley and D. Bethell in 1965 and 1966 and produced a number of interesting discoveries. Within the mound, which was 22m in diameter and 1.5m high, a Collared urn was found which was covered with a lid made from a round-based vessel. It contained the bones of a small-framed adult male about 18 years of age. The urn was of a very early date and closely related to a type of pottery known as Ferngate ware, a variant of the Neolithic Peterborough ware found at Woodhouse End in Gawsworth. It was round bottomed and not originally intended for funerary use. The cinerary urn stood in an ash-filled cremation pit.

In addition over one hundred flint flakes were discovered, scattered on the upper surface of the barrow ‘in an annular distribution, as if strewn around by a person standing in the centre of the mound’ as well as a crude leaf-shaped arrowhead. The urns are now in the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. .

Access

The barrow is located in a field close to the east of Bearhurst Lane (the road linking Pexhill Road to School Lane in Henbury). However, it is not visible from the Lane due to the height of the bank and hedge.
